Yeah, yeah, we know... Pysanky is a Western cultural tradition and Karma originated in the East. Why have we combined the two?
Believe it or not, they have a lot in common. Pysanky are intended as gifts imbued with well wishes and karma is about getting what you deserve. One of the 12 laws of karma is the Law of Giving & Hospitality. Another is the Law of Creativity. Need we say more? So get your Pysankarma on! It's good for you and all of mankind! Keep reading to find out how Pysanky artists save the world one egg at a time.
Hi I'm Kellie, creator of Pysankarma Designs and a happy pysanky artist since 2000. While travelling in Eastern Europe, I fell in love with this ancient folk art and came back to the US determined to create my own pysanky. As a detailed-oriented artist, pysanky just speaks to me. The mystery and fragility of working on eggs and the unpredictability of the process turns these very natural and mundane items into precious treasures. My designs are inspired by the people & places around me. I particularly enjoy working with clients on commissioned eggs; turning their ideas and messages into unique works of art.
The art of pysanky (from the Ukrainian verb to write) dates back to ancient times. Folk tales reveal that the people who lived in the region now known as the Ukraine worshipped the sun. The warmth of the sun made things grow and provided light after the darkness, therefore the sun was the source of all life. Eggs decorated with symbols of nature were used in sun worshipping ceremonies and became an integral part of spring rituals serving as benevolent talismans. These stories also tell that birds were the sun god's most chosen creation for through flight, they were able to get close to him. Humans sought closeness to their sun god through obtaining the eggs of their god's chosen creation. A mysterious source of life, these eggs were considered magical objects. To this day people are still seeking the answer to the age-old question, Which came 1st, the chicken or the egg?
With the acceptance of Christianity, decorated eggs continued to play an important role in Christian rituals. Many symbols of the old sun worship survived and were adapted to represent a variety of Christian beliefs.
As if eggs weren't mysterious enough, there's an old Carpathian legend that says the fate of the world depends on the creation of pysanky. As long as this tradition persists, the world is safe from an imprisoned, evil dragon determined to destroy the world. Every year the dragon sends out minions to see how many pysanky have been created. If the number is low the dragon's chains are weakened, leaving him free to wreak havoc and destruction. If, on the other hand, the numbers of pysanky have grown, the chains are strengthened and humanity is safe for yet another year.
